Metalsin‘s off-grid solar powered seawater desalination system is a game-changer for regions where the power grid doesn’t reach but the sun never quits. By integrating high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) systems with industrial-grade seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology, we provide a 100% energy-independent solution for freshwater production. This makes it a vital lifeline for remote island communities, coastal eco-resorts, and offshore research stations that require a constant supply of high-purity drinking water without the logistical burden and cost of fuel transport.

Skid-mounted seawater RO system housed in a 20′ container with solar PV arrays as power source.
This system is built on a skid-mounted architecture for rapid deployment and can be fully containerized to protect sensitive electronics from harsh, salty air. Its rugged, portable design is specifically engineered to support temporary construction camps, military outposts, and emergency disaster relief operations along the world’s most remote coastlines. It’s not just a water maker; it’s a self-sustaining utility that turns “off-grid” into “on-demand.”
The photovoltaic system is engineered to provide stable, high-torque power required for desalination without the noise or fuel costs of traditional diesel generators.

Main components of an off-grid solar PV system: solar panel, inverter, controller, battery, mechanical & electrical accessories.
To make solar-powered desalination viable, minimizing power consumption is critical. Our system achieves this through an integrated dnergy recovery device (ERD). The workflow begins with the Feed Pump drawing raw seawater into a multi-stage pre-treatment sequence. This includes dual Dosing Systems to optimize water chemistry and a Multi-media Filter followed by a Precision Filter to remove suspended solids. This ensures that only the cleanest water reaches the sensitive reverse osmosis membranes.

The process flow chart for a typical solar-powered SWRO system integrated with ERD.
The core desalination stage features a High-Pressure Pump working in tandem with an energy recovery device (ERD), such as an axial pressure-exchanging module. The ERD captures the high-pressure energy from the discharge (brine) stream and recycles it back into the feed line, significantly reducing the electrical load required from the solar array. The final product water is then delivered to storage, while an integrated CIP (clean-in-place) system stands ready for automated membrane maintenance.
