What Is A NB-IoT Smart Water Meter?

Depending on the environment, it can feature either a dry dial (magnetically coupled, waterproof, fog-resistant) or a wet dial (simple structure, clear reading), providing flexibility for both indoor and outdoor use. With functions such as automatic metering, remote valve control, real-time communication, and fault alarm, NB-IoT smart water meters are a core technology in modern smart water management systems for residential, commercial, and municipal applications.

Structurally, the device integrates a controller, NB-IoT communication module, (optional) motorized valve, and data acquisition/storage unit on top of a traditional mechanical base. Communication is achieved directly through the operator’s NB-IoT network (e.g., LTE Cat NB) without requiring a local gateway. Powered by a built-in lithium battery with ultra-low standby current (≤ 8 μA), the meter supports multi-year maintenance-free operation with reliable, low-power performance even in remote locations.

Working Principle and System Functionality.

When water flows through the meter, the mechanical or electronic base converts the flow rate into electrical pulse signals, which are collected and processed by the controller. The controller digitizes the data and transmits it via the NB-IoT module to a cloud-based platform or utility management system, enabling real-time monitoring, usage analysis, and remote control functions such as valve operation, arrears-based shutoff, or abnormal event alarms.
